LIKE FROGS TRAPPED INSIDE A WELL - THE STORY OF WAEREBO KIDS
Waerebo
kids in an empty library holding one of the books we brought for them. They
listened attentively as I read to them the story of Snow White & The Seven
Dwarfs. Even after I was done they flipped through the books over and over
again, so engrossed by the window of the world they held in their hands.
One
evening, I was showing some kids photos from my gadgets. It was easy to keep
them entertained but hard to find pictures they can relate to, as they have
never seen any of these photos before, even when these photos include Monas,
Candi Borobudur, Raissa, and Cherrybelle.
Going
to school takes 4 hours hike which eventually required them to live in a
dormitory away from their parents as young as 6 years old.
Hatta
Rajasa donated the library to Waerebo in 2013, yet until now it hasn't been
opened since he couldn't find the time to come to Waerebo. The books donated by
travelers are lying in such poor condition in Pak Yoseph's house, the
coordinator of the library.
The
kids lack resources (money, books, teachers, even nutrition) and therefore lack
knowledge about the world or even Indonesia itself.
The
right question to be asked isn’t about our ability to help them. It's about our
willingness to jump into the well and show them the light.
